For more than 100 million years, sea turtles have covered vast distances across the world’s oceans, filling a vital role in the balance of marine habitats. Sea turtles spend most of their lives in the ocean and only come ashore to bask or nest. Baby sea turtles face a number of obstacles to make it back to sea after hatching; some experts say only one out of a thousand will survive to adulthood under natural conditions.
Sea turtles are increasingly becoming an endangered species around the world. The natural obstacles faced by young and adult sea turtles are staggering, but it is the increasing threats caused by humans that are driving them to extinction. Conservation efforts play a very important role in changing this situation for the turtles of Panama and specifically in Playa Venao, our Workation destination.
As a digital nomad visiting Playa Venao, you can also get involved to protect these beautiful creatures during the Workation program! We will collaborate with Save the Turtles Playa Venao, a non-profit foundation consisting of volunteers committed to the care and conservation of sea turtles in Playa Venao.
Save the Turtles Playa Venao does this through protection initiatives, public education, and regenerative tourism. Their mission is to protect and conserve the sea turtles that visit the beaches of Playa Venao, reduce the impact of predators and poachers, and catalyze awareness through local community engagement and impactful research. With this Workation comes the opportunity to learn from & support thisfoundation!
When you book your Workation, you are invited to participate in an educational workshop by Save the Turtles Playa Venao where we’ll learn more about sea turtles and what the foundation does in Playa Venao to protect them. This takes place at our Workation beach accommodation every Friday afternoon, at the onsite turtle nursery. After this workshop, it’s up to you to decide how you wish to get involved in helping the sea turtles during the rest of your Workation!
You can choose to help the foundation monitor the beach for new nesting sites on daily patrols and relocate nests to safety at the dedicated nursery. Once the eggs hatch, you can assist in releasing the baby turtles on the beach, back into the ocean.
The sea turtle conservation program in Panama seeks to improve and diminish the negative impact created by the lack of awareness and care of sea turtles and the environment that surrounds them. Join us in helping protect the sea turtles in Playa Venao during your Workation!
Current data shows less than a few hundred baby turtles have made it down to the ocean in the past year at natural nest sites. In some cases, Save the Turtles Playa Venao reported as many as 7 nests laid in one night, but all have fallen to poachers, dogs, and tractors on the beach. Help us relocate the nests to safety at the nursery. So far, Save the Turtles Playa Venao has collected and relocated almost 25,000 eggs in just 2 years. They’ve had as many as 500 baby turtles released in a single day!
Get in touch with us today and reserve your Workation spot! Bring your remote job and let us arrange the rest: work from a tropical beach and explore with a group of remote workers all the adventures that Playa Venao has to offer.
Tortugas Playa Venao was founded by Scott Crystal at the end of 2020 with the aim to protect one of Panama’s most vital nesting sites for the Olive Ridley Sea Turtles: Playa Venao. Over time, a group of local and international volunteers developed. Over the past two years, they built three nurseries with over 300 nests relocated for a better chance to live. Ultimately, the dream is to increase the survival rate for these majestic creatures and ensure their return to this beach for all the years to come.
We’re so excited to support Save the Turtles Playa Venao during our Workation and learn more about the local ecosystem: we hope that you share this enthusiasm as a digital nomad visiting our beautiful beach called Playa Venao. An unforgettable experience!
